Seven Faces of Illinois Tourism

National Travel & Tourism Week 2024

It’s #NationalTravelandTourismWeek and we’re thrilled to celebrate the people who make our industry so special.

All week long, we’ll be shining a light on those who make a real impact, no matter how big or small. The tourism industry has a critical role in powering economies, communities, and connections.

And people are at the heart of it all.

Jan Seeley

Director, Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend

Illinois is home to more than just the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, and White Sox! Each year, hundreds of sporting events are held around the state, welcoming spectators and participants from all over the country—and the world.

Jan and her team host 10,000+ guests for the Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend.

What does your average day look like when you help a visitor?

"Our 3-day Race Weekend is all about making our 10,000+ guests feel like we are putting on the event just for them. As director, I strive to interact with as many of our participants as possible throughout the weekend—whether that happens at packet pickup, the health & fitness expo, the hospitality suite, the start line and finish line, or anywhere in between. Extending a warm welcome starts with me, but is carried out at every corner of our event as well—from our host hotels where staff wear official race weekend T-shirts, to over 2,000 kind and enthusiastic volunteers, who are the beating heart of our event."

How does it feel to help those visiting our state?

"I love how Race Weekend shines the brightest of lights on our Champaign-Urbana & Savoy community. That fills me to my core. I want our participants to “float” out of town after Race Weekend, eager to return to our incredible community after receiving “red carpet” treatment the entire Race Weekend."

I have run races all over the country, so I know from personal experience that our community is, bar none, the friendliest, kindest, most welcoming, and supportive anywhere.

Server, Karma Pub (DoubleTree Hotel)

There’s no place like home, and when you are on the road, finding an atmosphere that is welcoming and comforting is key.

Carmela Perea, Server at the DoubleTree Hotel’s Karma Pub in Mundelein, knows a thing or two about delivering a hospitable and uniquely Illinois experience.

What does your average day look like when you help a visitor?

"For me, the most important thing is to make a great first impression on guests. I want to make them feel comfortable and that the hotel is not just a place to sleep, but their home away from home. This is true for me as I feel this is my second home and I always see the guest as part of my family. I like to have small conversations with our guests and find out the reason for their visit."

People visit from all over the world and I enjoy learning their cultures and greeting them in their native language.
