Some ideas on where to eat in Rockford...
-
1. Discovery Center Museum
Is it learning? is it play? Hey, here it can be both. More than 250 hands-on exhibits are sure to spark your curiosity. Kids can build and test parachutes, experiment with air pressure, and even step inside a giant eyeball. The on-site planetarium brings distant galaxies right up close, and the outdoor Rock River Discovery Park fuses art and science in a multi-story climbing structure.

2. Anderson Japanese Gardens
Tranquility and inspiration are the names of the game here. This is the kind of place that will linger in a child's memory for decades, full of winding paths revealing tumbling waterfalls, graceful stone lanterns, and the bright flashes of koi fish in serene ponds. It's also a great way to get acquainted with Japanese culture, so check out their website to see what events, activities, and classes are on during your visit.

3. Rock Cut State Park
Here's a different kind of natural beauty for you. At Rock Cut State Park, you can cast lines into Pierce Lake for bass and bluegill, or glide across Olson Lake in canoes. Miles of trails wind through prairies and woodlands, perfect for stretching short legs and expanding curious minds. Come winter, the park becomes a snowy playground for sledding and cross-country skiing. You can even set up camp at one of the campsites, and enjoy nights under star-filled skies.

4. Burpee Museum of Natural History
To young kids, most things are "prehistory", but Burpee is where true prehistory comes to life. It's where you can meet both a juvenile T.rex (Jane) and a triceratops (Homer) - both of whom are skeletons, fortunately. You'll see what Illinois was like back in that time, as well as later periods, including exhibits that honor local indigenous history. Throw in a little geology and some live animal displays, and you've got the perfect recipe for a fun family day out.

5. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor
What can we tell you about one of Illinois' great water parks? As you'd expect, it serves up watery excitement for all ages. You've got a massive wave pool, as well as a winding lazy river for a more leisurely time. There's water slides, of course, running the gamut of mild to wild. The younger members of your party can enjoy dedicated areas with pint-sized slides and spray features. And there are plenty of places to snag a shady spot and refuel at one of the park's eateries. Sounds pretty good to us.

Rockford's early settlers dubbed it "Forest City", in tribute to its abundant lush woodlands. That spirit lives on today in its parks, gardens, and green spaces. Highlights include Anderson Japanese Gardens (known as one of America's finest Japanese gardens) and Rock Cut State Park, but there are plenty more! Rockford Park District is a good place to start, but we've also highlighted a few favorites here.
