The Jackson County Historical Society will host a cemetery walk, featuring seven Carbondale residents who died in 1923. Attendees will learn about the lives of seven individuals and their families as well as stories about the history of Carbondale.
Learn About Carbondale History and the People Who Lived It. The individuals being featured are:
- Hazel Price Algee – A 19-year-old single mother with an infant son, who died tragically but left a legacy.
- Francis Marion Batson – Civil War veteran and prisoner of war at the infamous Andersonville prison.
- Thomas McKinney – Carbondale physician who served the community for 55 years.
- Daniel Parkinson – President of the SINU Teachers College for 17 years.
- Clara Perce Pratt – A single mother working in a professional man’s world.
- John Jefferson McDaniel – Makanda farmer and Civil War veteran.
- William "Billy" Henry Plater – A 10-year-old boy that 1920s medicine could not save.
