Christmas in the Village - Cobden

Spend the day in downtown Cobden, where you can enjoy fresh-roasted nuts while listening to strolling Victorian carolers and madrigal players, take an old-fashioned horse-drawn surrey or wagon ride around the village, and visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Feed Store, where handcrafted wreaths and gingerbread houses will be on display, shop the Christmas Bazaars and watch the lighting of the village tree.

There will a Cobden Christmas in the Village Random Draw Doubles Disc Golf Tournament at the Cobden Community Park at 10a.m. Registration begins at 9a.m. Contact: John Wingate 618/697-2479.

The Union County Historical Society will conduct an exhibit titled “Bears’n Chairs” at the Society’s Resource Center, 103 N. Appleknocker (next to the Feed Store) from 10a.m.-4p.m. The display will feature a variety of stuffed bears and a collection of vintage Christmas photos.

A Walking History Tour will be conducted at 11a.m. and 3p.m. Participants are asked to be in front of Downtown Abbey, corner of W. Oak and N. Appleknocker. The tour will discuss the history of the Downtown Abbey block, history of the bridge, and history of the Broadway house and Phillips house.

Bazaars featuring holiday decorations, gifts, crafts and homemade treats will be offered at the Union County Museum’s Christmas Shop, the St. Joseph Catholic Church parish hall, and the Apostolic Lighthouse Church. St. Joseph Church will serve a selection of delicious soups for lunch from 10:30a.m.-2p.m.

Cobden is the home of an antique mall, bead/fiber shop, and restaurants that will be open and celebrating the holiday season. Most activities and shops open for business between 8a.m. to 10a.m. Cobden has recently experienced the opening of Steam Shovel Coffee House and hosts several great restaurants including Downtown Abbey, The Iron Whisk, and the nationally recognized Little House of Tacos. Come to Cobden and stroll the unique downtown while enjoying an old fashion Christmas celebration. The village is located in the heart of the Shawnee Wine Trail.

The Cobden School Band will perform a Christmas concert near the downtown park shelter at 4:30p.m. The celebration will conclude at 5p.m. with the presentation of the Christmas lights at the shelter.
